Mansard roofs (Sometimes referred to as a French Roof) are multi-sided gambrel-style roofs with two slopes on each of their four sides. They allow to turn attic space into a potentially habitable extra floor, and they also have the added advantage of dormer windows which are fantastic for letting in light.

Mansard roof construction is quite involved, with a mixture of tiles of various types, and also dormer windows, leadwork, and chimneys. There are a variety of options available with regard to tile colours, and styles, all of which need to be installed correctly by knowledgeable roofers. Constructed properly, a Mansard roof can last more than 40 to 75 years.

Maintenance of a mansard roof can be pretty involved, and it is recommended to have them professionally inspected twice a year. During a check, a roofer will visually inspect for slipped tiles, ensure that the ridge and hip (bonnet) tiles are intact and not missing, and check all leadwork around any chimneys and dormer windows, and also ensure brickwork pointing is intact. Doing this will ensure that any issues found can be swiftly resolved.
